Description
Scientific name, Quercus Borealis, its name can be deceiving, as Oak bark tends to be grayer in appearance than it is white. The wood itself is a light brown, with sapwood (wood directly underneath the bark) that is paler in comparison. Oak is heavily used in furniture manufacturing.
Oak has a closed cellular structure, that allows the wood to be more resistant to water than other types of w ood. To be more specific, cellular structure are irregular growths on the wood
(or plant cells) that prevent liquid from penetrating. Because of this unique feature, Oak is popularly used t o make Wine barrels, outdoor furniture, and is even used in shipbuilding.
Oak also contains a high level of tannic acid, a natural substance found in the bark of certain
trees and in some plants (such as cotton). The presence of tannic acid in the wood allows it to
naturally resist insects and bacterial growth (mold and fungus), making it a great material for
indoor flooring.
